Our founder’s immigrant grandmother’s first language was Yiddish. She was born into a worn and fraying past in the old country. M – B – L are the root letters for the word “furniture” in at least 32 languages around the world
“mebl” rhymes with pebble. Founded in 2015 in Brooklyn, New York, mebl | Transforming Furniture originated as a retailer elevating a diverse community of talented artisans building new, high-quality furniture out of old reclaimed materials. For two years, we operated a pop-up showroom at Union Square in NYC.
With pandemic lock-downs in spring 2020, our retail doors closed. We were disappointed, then saw a light and pivoted. Building on our original sustainability mission, we now aim to help catapult practices of the circular economy to the forefront of the furniture ecosystem.
